Geocache Description:

"On the Morning of July 31, 1843, two pavilions were decorated with greens and a flagstaff stood on the plain east of town. On the street line to the West, tents from warships in port punctuated their arid surroundings." (Richard Greer)

Welcome to Hawaii's first public park.

Where this park resides, an admiral of the British Navy had the British jack lowered and the Hawaiian flag raised then gave a speech at the spot where a fountain now sprouts. The park which commemorates the occasion when seen from downtown is shaped like a flag with pathways in place suggesting the double cross of the British Jack. A street named for Great Britain forms what appears to be the flagpole and the top of the flag is marked by a street named after the British Queen who ordered the admiral to restore the monarchy. The Admiral was Richard Thomas and the occasion was the restoration of the Monarchy resulting from an overthrow of the monarchy by British Captain Lord George Paulet five months before. The occasion would be celebrated in Hawaii as Restoration Day or Hawaii Independence Day.
