THE CACHE can be accessed easily when travelling from the north or the south on the A38. Pull-in for one car in side roads nearby to the cache itself, but parking on main road NOT advised as close to A38 slip roads.
Chudleigh is a town between Exeter and Plymouth, thankfully bypassed now by the A38 since 1972. The town has expanded considerably recently as many commuter houses have been built, but the town still retains a very happy community feel about it. Many outdoor activities are provided for residents including an outdoor swimming school, cricket and football field, bowling, and rock climbing at the Rock Centre. The Town Hall’s many rooms are booked for various indoor activities for all ages, and the Rest Centre holds a coffee morning for local clubs or charities every Saturday morning. There was a settlement here in the 11th century when it formed part of the bishop’s Episcopal manor of which there are still some traces of the former medieval bishop’s palace, but unfortunately most of the medieval properties were destroyed by fire in May 1807 when the village bakery caught fire during a drought; only the parish church and 7 houses were left standing after the fire. The town prospered as a wool town from the 13th century onwards, and was granted a Town Charter in 1309. Nearby is Ugbrooke Park, the home of Lord and Lady Clifford, which lies in a deer park. The highest part of the park is Castle Dyke, an earthwork from which there are wonderful views of the area and of the town, and it is believed to be an iron age fort. I discovered from the Wikipedia site [which just goes to prove one can always learn something new and different] is that the town’s name is “Chudley” in the Harry Potter books. The Chudley Cannons are one of only 13 quidditch teams that have been playing in the professional Quidditch League of Britain and Ireland which was established in 1674. The team players wear bright orange robes with a speeding cannon ball and a double ‘C’ in black. The last time they won the League was in 1892. </></> 5.2.21 cache has gone missing again, so 4th cache is now a nano.
