Geocache Description:

On a short trip to Miami, Swat. and Arf. noticed there were not enough caches in South Beach (SoBe), so they decided to place one and give a French Canadian contribution to SoBe. Unfortunately, by Groundspeak rules, they can't own that hide, so they've asked me (HurricaneJuan) to keep it alive by adopting it.

Historic:

At 2.5 miles, the Collins bridge was the longest vehicular wooden bridge in the world. The middle of the bridge had a steel lattice truss design, while the ends were primarily wooden, as well as the deck being wooden for the entire length.

It was completed in May of 1913 at a cost of $100,000$ and opened on June 12th, providing a critical link to the newly established Miami Beach, formerly accessible only by a ferry service. Tolls were 15 cents for cars and carriages, 5 cents per passenger and 5 cents for bicycles and pedestrians.

At the time the Collins bridge was built, the Venetian Islands did not yet exists. The only existing island was Bull's Island, now called Belle Isle. The remaining Venetian Islands were created by dredging Biscayne Bay in the early 1920's.
