A post-office box or Post Office box (commonly referred to as a PO Box or a Postal Box) is a uniquely addressable (numbered) lockable box located on the premises of a post office.

In many countries, particularly in Africa, and the Middle East there is no 'door to door' delivery of mail. Consequently renting a PO box has traditionally been the only way to receive mail in such countries.

Generally, post office boxes are rented from the post office either by individuals or by businesses on an annual basis.

History of Post Office Boxes

Beginning in 1653 in France, spreading over Europe and into the New World, postal systems offered mail sorting for town residents and cities. Postal departments started with post office boxes, then street-corner boxes, and finally home delivery. However, residents were allowed to keep post office boxes instead of registering for home delivery.

In 1653, Frenchman De Valayer established a postal system in Paris.
He set up mail boxes and delivered any letters placed in them if they used envelopes that only he sold. An enemy put live mice into the letter boxes and ruined De Valayer's business.

Sourced from various web sites.
