This series offers you the opportunity to see and explore the beautiful mountain wilderness of Mid Wales known as the Elan Valley. You can also add our Dam It series to your journey and find other caches along these routes.
You are either starting to enter the Elan Valley Estate or are just leaving it... depending which direction you're going. If you are entering over the cattle grid please drive carefully as sheep and their lambs often wander across the road without warning!!
Here at our Elan Mt Rd Series No 4 you are on the old drover’s road with the remains of the old community of Blaencwm in the valley below, where there was once a chapel and a few houses and some hill farms. There, in 1783, Thomas Johnes, the squire of Hafod Estate, built a bridge over the River Ystwyth. His coat of arms can still be seen on the side of the centre turrets looking over the river.
In the field next to the cache you can see the ridge outlines showing field enclosures and buildings of an old settlement.
On the opposite side of the valley, you can see where work has taken place along the old leat which took water down the valley to the Cwmystwyth mines. Now they have put in a hydroelectric scheme using some of the water from the Ystwyth and Dilliw rivers. A meter-wide pipe has been buried all along the leat from the stream dam to the hydro unit below GZ.
We would like to give grateful thanks to the Elan Valley Trust and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water for their kind permission to allow us to place this series of caches on their land. Please see www.elanvalley.org.uk for further information about the Elan Valley and events held during the year.
