The Tallaroook to Mansfield rail line opened in 1890. Cathkin was the start of the branch line to Alexandra, opened in 1909. The last passengers were carried on 28th May 1977.
The recently completed Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail is a distance of 134 km, including a link to Alexandra.
