Cache is located at the site of a shaft sunk over a period of 85 days in 1867 to facilitate the completion of C.P.R.R. Summit Tunnel #6. This shaft allowed the tunnel construction to proceed on four rock faces instead of only hand-drilling and blasting from the two end portals.
As stated on a nearby commemorative plaque, "The most difficult obstacle facing the Central Pacific Railroad was overcome when the tunnel was completed in August 1867. The first passenger train passed through the tunnel in June 18, 1868. The last train went through in 1993."
Cache is a waterproof match container. Please replace as found.
