Sturgeon Rock is a dramatic monolith rising out of the forest in the Silver Star Mountain Complex. The fishy name comes from the hexagonal basalt columns on the sheer eastern face of the peak that make it resemble a giant primordial fin(see pic).
There are multiple ways to approach, but the most straightforward will be from the Grouse Vista trailhead: Take the Tarbell Trail 3.5 miles to the Sturgeon Rock trail ( which is an old road), turn right and climb a mile on this steep track covered in loose rocks. When you get to an open meadowy area with a viewpont to the south, turn left up an old jeep track that takes you to the base of the western edge of the formation. Scramble up the rocks and enjoy a wonderful open ridgewalk with views of Mt Hood, Adams, Helens and Rainier. The double summit of Silver Star Mountain is just to the east.
Warning: Retrieving the cache may be a bit frightening!!! I lugged up a big ammo can, and there was no place to put it at the very top, so you will find it west of the summit block, located next to a little fir tree on a ledge about four feet down. Secure your center of gravity and peek over the edge. The can is tied to the ledge with a rope, just pull it up. Make sure you replace the cache so the next finder can grab it easily, thanks!
