Geocache Description:

A quick driveby cache....just make sure you park off the road!

STANDING taller than Melbourne's Bolte Bridge and spanning twice the length of the MCG, the rail bridge at Lal Lal is an engineering feat. The bridge has 11 columns stretching 350 metres across a valley at Lal Lal. The 42-metre high bridge is one of the largest and safest in Australia. Along with the smaller bridge at Millbrook it will be a vital part of the Bungaree deviation which will shave 4.8 kilometres off the train journey from Ballarat to Melbourne. Trains cross the bridge at 160kmh. The large columns are made of the same material as wind farm turbines, and were built in Portland before being moved to Lal Lal and Millbrook. The steel used is 32mm thick. Most parts of the Bungaree diversion will feature concrete sleepers, which are designed to be stronger, longer lasting and more environmentally friendly than traditional wood sleepers.
