Construction on the Midland Atlantic Bridge began in 1925. On December 22, 1926, shortly before 7 A.M., the first collapse took place. The bridge was being constructed from the Kentucky side of the river towards the West Virginia side and the first two spans had been bolted into place and were standing. The wood scaffolding to support the third stand was in place and it is where work was underway at the time. During the night of December 21, the Big Sandy River had taken a terrific rise. When workers left on the evening of December 21, the river was at normal pool levels, but by the next day, it was high and rising, choked with drift and various objects.
The drift had started to accumulate around the scaffolding at water level and workers were dispatched with spike poles to clear the mess and keep it from building up. The scaffolding was put under great stress, unknown to the workers trying to clear the debris. Shortly before 7 A.M., the workers heard a loud crack and the scaffolding fell approximately 30 feet into the icy water. Four workers went down with the structure. Swimming and surviving in the water was made very difficult by the fact that most had their pockets weighted with rivets and tools hung on their belts in addition to wearing heavy winter clothing.
