Geocache Description:

A replacement for the old GBD Yanonali Street cache. An easy find fairly near the Train and Bus stations.

After GeoBigDogs and I both archived our "Yanonali" caches, I figured there should be at least *one* in town telling the history of Chief Yanonali, for whom this street is named... This one is very close to his old cache...

Did you know that Five Chumash Indian villages flourished in this area along Santa Barbara's waterfront? They were:
  • Mispu, up on the SBCC campus;
  • El Banos, at the foot of Bath Street;
  • Chief Yanonali's large rancheria which was between Bath and Chapala Streets;
  • Amolomol, at the mouth of Mission Creek; and
  • Swetete, on the Clark Estate above the Bird Refuge.
Yanonali was an Indian chief who lived here time of the advent of the Franciscan padres. He was highly respected for his authority and influence. During the founding of the Santa Barbara Mission, Yanonali rendered valuable service to the padres,as he knew where the necessary lumber could be cut;how the large and heavy timbers could be transported all the way from Sant Ynez, which problems were left entirely in his charge. He was a lovable man, distinguishing himself by his friendship, kind acts and good will towards the Spaniardss. His jurisdiction extended from the Rincon south to the village of La Patera,north.
