Geocache Description:

Welcome to our second multistage puzzle cache. This cache replaces The Few, The Proud, The Geocachers (GC1PDQY).

This is a three stage puzzle cache which will take you to several locations around Beaufort, SC. The final cache is a camouflaged plastic container, located on public land. The above coordinates will not take you to the cache. Instead, they will bring you to a parking lot close to stage 1.
Parking is metered Monday – Saturday.
The first two stages will take you on a 1.25 mile walking tour of Beaufort. At a leisurely pace, the first two stages will take you somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes to complete.

If you want a more in depth (and longer ) downtown Beaufort experience, you might consider attempting the nearby Whereigo: Beaufort Walkabout Whereigo (GC4G0BQ) at the same time, since several of our downtown Beaufort stages take you to the same area as the Whereigo.

Stage 1: Visit the Beaufort water front park, located close to a “park and grab” cache:

Down by the River (GC1CHAX). You do not have to find this cache for stage 1, but while you’re here, you might as well. You know you’re addicted.

Somewhere in the park, you will find several monuments describing the history of Beaufort throughout the years. Find these monuments and answer the following questions:

1. In what year did a great storm come ashore at the high tide? Answer: _ H _ _.

2. In what year did Jean Ribaut and his French Huguenots attempt a colony on Parris Island?
Answer: _ _ _ A .

3. In what year was the waterfront park restoration project completed? Answer: _ _ _ B.

Now let’s take a walk: Go east towards the foot of the Woods Memorial bridge.

4. In what year was the Woods Memorial bridge dedicated? Answer: _ _ _ D.

5. Find two cannons located near the intersection of Bay street and Carteret street. Locate a historical marker and answer this question: the general whose first name is Stephen, was born in what year? Answer: _ _ C _.

6. Calculate G: G = B - 3.

Let’s walk back:
Go west on Bay street, and find some really old tabby, located next to I. Pinckney Simons gallery. Circa what year is this tabby from? Answer: _ _ _ F.

Stage 2: (Waypoint coordinates are listed below)
Take a half mile walk to the Parish Church of St. Helena. Find a historical marker and answer this question: How many American generals are buried in the churchyard? Answer: E.

Now stroll back to your vehicle while you enjoy the view and drive to the final stage:

Stage 3: Final location. We recommend closed shoes, such as sneakers for this stage, due to the terrain. This may require wading through a few inches of water during high tide. Please bring a pen.

Final cache location is at:
N 32o 2A.BCD
W 080o 4E.FGH

Congratulations to AuTiger73 for being FTF!

Cache is located near a public boat landing and is accessible 24/7. Please park at the boat landing. The cache is not on Parris Island or any private or government owned land. Please use stealth, especially on weekends, as location is a frequent muggle gathering place.
Good luck and enjoy your stay in Beaufort!
