Duncan Elementary - An Island Spirit Legacy Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Cookie Makers: Ok, looks like it's time to archive this one and move on. I'm worried that the rock wall was pulled apart with people looking for the cache. Hope all who found it had fun with it, and sorry to those who didn't get a chance to! Thanks everyone!

Duncan Elementary

We originally wanted this placed near the actual Duncan Elementary School but due to several reason it just wasn't possible. With such an amazing building and piece of history we really wanted to include it in our series of caches so, if you'd like to drive past to see the school, it is at 1033 Nagel Street. Reverand David Holmes arrived in Victoria, Canada in 1867. He was appointed by the bishop to be the pastor in Yale where he met and married a school teacher named Susan Nagle...note that surname. His directive changed in 1871 when he was moved to Cowichan to work among the Quamichan. Somewhere around 1880 he aquired 500 acres of land between Cairnsmore Road and Sherman Road. They built a house, ran a saw mill, and in December 11, 1913 the school Duncan Elementary was officially opened on land donated by David Holmes. The road leading to the school is called Nagle Street. Duncal Elementary is now a Municipal Heritage Building, beautifully covered in ivy.
