Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the Porter Tunnel, which is where one of the worst mine disasters in Schuylkill County had happened.

In March 1977, one of the worst mining disasters in Schuylkill County occured at the Porter Tunnel Mine. Nine miners lost their lives when an underground pocket of water broke loose and flooded the mine. I was a junior in high school at the time of the accident and shared my hall locker with the daughter of one of the miners that did not survive. Below is a two link to a stories about that accident.
