La leggenda della Chiesa della Madonnina del lago
L'edificazione della chiesa della Madonnina del Lago ad Azzate è oggetto di una bella leggenda.
Si racconta infatti di Niero delle Rose, un cavaliere di ritorno dalle crociate, che percorreva queste lande in una notte buia. Faceva molto freddo, tutt’intorno solo ghiaccio e desolazione, e, lontano, sulle colline, gli ululati dei lupi alla ricerca di cibo. Ma il nobile cavaliere andava per la sua strada, condotto dai sentimenti del suo cuore e dall’amore per la sua bella sposa dai capelli d’oro. Durante la lontananza il suo ricordo gli aveva allievato la solitudine e ora non vedeva l’ora di riabbracciare la fiorentina Fazia degli Oberti, al sicuro in un castello della Valtravaglia.
Nulla e nessuno poteva fermare il crociato che, con il suo fido cavallo, attraversavano di gran carriera le terre che lo dividevano dal tanto atteso abbraccio.
Ad un tratto davanti a lui apparve un vastissimo campo ricoperto di neve e partì al galoppo per attraversare quella grande prateria.
Alla fine intravide alcune case e si avvicinò confidando in qualche buon’anima che offrisse una calda vivanda per rifocillarlo prima di riprendere la strada.
E’ un contadino di Azzate a dare aiuto al cavaliere che, ascoltato il racconto del viaggio, gli dice del terribile rischio che ha corso. Il vasto campo ricoperto di neve non è una prateria, ma il lago ghiacciato che avrebbe potuto in qualsiasi istante sgretolarsi sotto il peso del nobile e del suo cavallo. Niero delle Rose impallidisce, si rende conto di aver scampato per miracolo la morte. Grato alla sua buona stella, ma soprattutto alla Madonna che lo ha protetto, Niero lascia al contadino una borsa di denari perché venga eretta una cappella, in voto, proprio nel punto che egli aveva raggiunto incolume al termine della sua forsennata corsa.
Oggi in questo luogo si trova la cappella della Madonnina del Lago.
La stessa leggenda che viene legata alla fondazione della chiesetta della SS. Trinità a Gavirate, con l’unica differenza di un percorso opposto compiuto da un altro glorioso cavaliere.
La popolazione ha però sommato queste due storie per crearne una terza, la quale altro non è che la somma delle precedenti. Il racconto parte da una notte fredda e buia che vede due cavalieri, provenienti dalle sponde opposte, che s’incrociano al centro del lago. L’uno insegue l’amore, l’altro sta compiendo una missione per il suo popolo. I due sbattono l’uno contro l’altro e subito ne nasce una contesa per sapere chi abbia il diritto di precedenza. Entrambi hanno un valido motivo, viste le leggi della cavalleria, per pretendere di passare per primi e, dato che la questione non si risolve, passano subito alle armi per arrivare a una soluzione. I due non sanno di lottare sopra un lago ghiacciato e la contesa prosegue per tutta la notte senza che ne emerga un vincitore. Alle prime luci dell’alba uno dei due cavalieri sferra un colpo che si conficca nel ghiaccio e d’un tratto sotto i loro piedi si apre una voragine che li inghiotte. I due cavalieri, ricoperti dalla loro pesante armatura, non hanno possibilità di salvezza ed anzi un contadino di passaggio raccontò di aver visto i due combattenti procedere nella contesa anche mentre stavano per sprofondare nelle acque ghiacciate del lago.

The legend of the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Lake
The building of the church of the Madonna del Lago is the subject of a beautiful legend.
It is said to Niero of Rose, a knight returning from the Crusades, who walked these lands on a dark night. It was very cold, there werw ice and desolation all around, and away, the hills, the howls of wolves in search of food. But the noble knight went his way, led by the feelings of his heart and love for his beautiful wife with golden hair. In the distance his memory had alleviated loneliness and now he was looking forward to embrace the Florentine Fazia of Oberti, safe in the castle of Valtravaglia.
Nothing and nobody could stop the crusader who, with his trusty horse in a gallop across the land that separated him from the long-awaited hug.
Suddenly before him appeared a vast snow-covered field and he galloped off to cross the wide prairie.
At the end he saw some houses and he went there, trusting in some good soul that provided a hot dish for recovering him before resuming the road.
Fortunatly he found a farmer in Azzate who gave aid to the knight, and after have heard the story of the journey, tells of the terrible risk that he ran. The wide field covered with snow is not a bed, but the frozen lake at any moment he could crumble under the weight of the noble and his horse. Niero Rose pale, realizes that he miraculously escaped death. Grateful to his good fortune, but especially to Our Lady who protected him, Niero leaves the farmer a bag of money because he build a chapel, in voting at the point that he had safely reached the end of his frantic race.
Today in this point is placed the chapel of the Madonna del Lago
The same legend is linked to the founding of the church of SS. Trinity in Gavirate, with the only difference in an opposite path taken by another glorious knight.
The population has, however, added these two stories to create a third, which is nothing more than the sum of the above. The story begins with a cold, dark night that saw two riders coming from opposite sides, which intersect at the center of the lake. The one chasing love, the other is on a mission for his people. The two bump against each other and immediately there arises a contest to see who has the right of way. Both have a good reason, given the laws of chivalry, to pretend to go first, and given that the issue is not resolved, go immediately to arms to reach a solution. The two did not know how to fight on a frozen lake and the contest continues throughout the night without a winner will emerge. At dawn one of the two knights strikes a blow that sticks into the ice and suddenly beneath them opens a chasm that swallows them. The two knights, covered by their heavy armor, have no chance of salvation and even a peasant passing said he had seen the two combatants in the dispute to proceed even while they were about to plunge into the icy waters of the lake.
