Antelope was first used in 1930 with a 30' pole L-4 tower. The present 30' treated timber tower with R-6 flat cab was moved here from Lake Butte in the 1970's. It is staffed every summer, usually mid-June though early October.
Please note that this is the lookout's summer home. Be respectful and ask permission before climbing up. During and after thunderstorms, and during extreme fire danger, the lookout will likely be very busy doing their job and that is detecting new forest fires before they have a chance to get out of control. Daylight hours only, please.
There are a number of roads which lead to the area. The mile-long spur road to the lookout is rough and washed out in places, with several rocks to dodge. The road should be snow-free from mid-late May through the first big mountain snowstorm in the Fall.
Views include the Monument Rock Wilderness to the northeast, Castle Rock the east, Otis Mountain to the south, Calamity Butte Lookout to the southwest, and the Strawberry Wilderness to the northwest.
This area of the Forest has been impacted hard by a pine caterpiller/butterfly outbreak the last few years. OPB has a video that shows more about the defoliation present in the ponderosa pines.
