Having a fowl time at Gluepot Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Freddo: Gluepot went very well. We found 3 active nests and sighted two mallee fowl. This is a good result as we were expected to find none. Geocachers are excellent group for this challenge as we will happily follow an arrow to any site a few km into scrub. We can then find our way out of the trackless featureless bush without any trouble. We will try to do this type of project again in a few years time. Thanks to all who attended for you fantastic work.

Geocache Description:

Geocachers, there are other things you can do with a GPSr! The malleefowl of Gluepot need your assistance.

Join us for an event with a difference over the October long weekend, 29/9/2012 to 1/10/2012. Gluepot Reserve needs your help. The coordinates of malleefowl nests have been identified from previous surveys. The task is to check the current condition of the mapped nests in the reserve.

Coordinates of malleefowl nests will be downloaded to your GPSr. Each team will be given an area and a group of nests to check. The nests are all within 2km of a 2wd track. The walk to the nests and the collection of information will take up to 3 hours for each team. The cache terrain rating is based on this walk. The combined information retrieved by the survey will be an invaluable resource for Gluepot Reserve. Other activities will include a night session in the old Woolshed and BBQ.

Gluepot Reserve is located 64 km north of Waikerie. Follow the trail of caches and signs from Taylorville. The event coordinates are the Babbler Campsite in the heart of the reserve. Gluepot Reserve is extensively mapped in OSM. Cost of camping is $10 per vehicle per night. Visitors should aim to be self-sufficient. Before driving into Gluepot Reserve you will need:

Water. Bring sufficient water to cover your own drinking, cooking and washing needs. Water is a scarce resource at Gluepot Reserve. Riverland towns are unlikely to provide visitors with rain water, though treated domestic water is generally available.

Cooking. Only gas fires may be used. Gas bottles can be filled at the Waikerie Shell Service Station. No wood fires are permitted on the Reserve.

Lighting. Use battery, gas or kerosene lamps. Take spare batteries for torches.

Vehicle fuel is available at the Waikerie Shell Service Station. Fuel is not available at Gluepot Reserve.

Food. Note that fruit fly control programs mean that all fresh fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, onions, capsicums and tomatoes may not be carried into the Riverland district from elsewhere unless accompanied by an itemized proof of purchase from a South Australian retailer. Food items can be purchased at Riverland towns such as Renmark, Waikerie or Morgan. Ice is not available at Gluepot Reserve so plan your food requirements accordingly.

Garbage bag. Visitors must remove all their own rubbish so bring garbage bags to take all your rubbish away.

Equipment. Bring your binoculars, field guides, camera, and vehicle spares. The Reserve's flat to undulating tracks are suitable for mountain bikes. Remember to carry a puncture repair kit.

Firearms and pets are not permitted on the Reserve.

Gluepot Reserve Reserve is part of the largest block of intact mallee left in Australia. Gluepot is a birdwatchers' paradise with 190 species recorded including 6 species that are nationally threatened, Black-eared Miner, Malleefowl, Red-lored Whistler, Regent Parrot, Scarlet-chested Parrot and Striated Grasswren. 53 species of reptiles and 12 species of bats, some of which are nationally threatened have also been identified.

The original station buildings have been upgraded to house volunteer rangers, and to provide accommodation for researchers. A Visitor Centre has been built and the wool shed has been converted into a Training Centre. Gluepot Reserve has four campgrounds and 14 walking trails .
