This is a joint Bonus Cache for our Elan Mountain Road Series and our friend Aspired's Dam It! Drive through series. Both of our series offered you the opportunity to see and explore the beautiful mountain wilderness of Mid Wales known as the Elan Valley. Aspired's Dam It! Drive through series took you on a wonderful journey through the heart of the Elan Valley Estate enjoying the vistas of the dams and reservoirs. Our Elan Mountain Road series showed you the Estate’s extent and took you high up onto the top of this beautiful wilderness to enjoy the far reaching views, peace and tranquillity. We all hope you enjoyed your journeys around this area and will return for another visit to explore more of it’s beauty and wonders. Here going to the Bonus Cache you cross the Claerwen Dam which is 184 ft (56 m) high and 1167 ft (355 m) long. The dam holds back almost as much water as the combined total of the three earlier dams built in the neighbouring Elan Valley. The Claerwen dam was designed to be in keeping with the appearance of the much older structures nearby. Although built in concrete, the huge dam was faced with dressed stone at considerable extra cost in materials and labour. By the late 1940’s it was necessary to employ over a hundred skilled stonemasons from Italy because most skilled British workers were employed on restoration work on the Houses of Parliament in London after the war. The construction of the Claerwen dam, the last of the dams in the district, took six years, using a workforce of 470. The improved techniques and mechanisation of large-scale civil engineering projects meant that large numbers of manual workers were no longer needed. The Claerwen dam was ceremonially declared open by the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth in October 1952, in one of the first official engagements of her reign. You are able to find all the 6 numbers required to fill in the missing co-ords on EITHER of the two series. So even if you miss some on one you could get a chance to find them on the other:) The co-ords for the BONUS CACHE are... N52 15 .ABC W003 39.DEF Toilets and a picnic area are available below the dam with access via the lower road. We would like to give greatful thanks to the Elan Valley Trust and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water for their kind permission to allow us to place this series of caches on their land. Please see www.elanvalley.org.uk for further information about the Elan Valley and events held during the year.
