The Parakoila Mosque . A thee hundred year old building.

If you are interested in seeing a Muslim temple, you can see the remains of an old Turkish mosque, just outside the village of Parakoila. Park your car and walk about 100 meters due east. Here you will find the ruins of the old main building, but what is really interesting is that you can also see the minaret which is still standing. After three or more hundred years and without any care or restoration, it is still standing absorbing the powers of nature and people’s indifference although in the last 15 years part of its top is missing as you can see in the pictures provided. Of course, it is of different religion and another era but it is also part of the islands history. We should preserve it in order to remember the past!. There isn’t any more written information about this building, except rumors and stories at the village’s small coffee shops. It is up to you to listen to these stories and believe them or not. I would not suggest trying to climb up the minaret since it is not very safe but do search and find the small decoration details on the outside walls of the minaret such as the clever use of clay and ceramic tiles showing the Arabian technique and influence. Please be careful as I can’t guarantee that snakes know you are a harmless geocacher, especially when you search for the cache! If you don’t wish to take the risk, a photo of you in front of the minaret will be accepted as a proof of your visit, since my reason to bring you here was, to show you this place!

Αν ενδιαφέρεστε να δείτε ένα μουσουλμανικό τέμενος, μπορείτε να δείτε τα ερείπια ενός παλιού τουρκικού τζαμιού, λίγο έξω από το χωριό Παράκοιλα. Παρκάρετε το αυτοκίνητό σας και περπατήστε περίπου 100 μέτρα ανατολικά. Εδώ θα βρείτε τα ερείπια του παλιού κεντρικού κτιρίου, αλλά αυτό που είναι πραγματικά ενδιαφέρον είναι ότι μπορείτε επίσης να δείτε το μιναρέ που παραμένει όρθιος. Μετά από τριακόσια ή και περισσότερα χρόνια και χωρίς καμία φροντίδα ή αποκατάσταση, εξακολουθεί να στέκεται απορροφώντας τις δυνάμεις της φύσης και την αδιαφορία των ανθρώπων, αν και τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια μέρος της κορυφής του λείπει, όπως μπορείτε να δείτε στις παρεχόμενες φωτογραφίες. Φυσικά, είναι διαφορετικού θρησκεύματος και μιας άλλης εποχής, αλλά είναι επίσης μέρος της ιστορίας του νησιού. Θα πρέπει να το διατηρήσουμε για να θυμόμαστε το παρελθόν!. Δεν υπάρχουν γραπτές πληροφορίες σχετικά με αυτό το κτίριο, εκτός από φήμες και ιστορίες στα καφενεία του χωριού. Είναι στο χέρι σας να ακούσετε αυτές τις ιστορίες τους και να πιστέψετε ή όχι. Δεν θα πρότεινα να δοκιμάσετε να ανεβείτε στο μιναρέ, δεδομένου ότι δεν είναι πολύ ασφαλές, αλλά αναζητήστε και βρείτε τις μικρές λεπτομέρειες διακόσμησης στους εξωτερικούς τοίχους του μιναρέ, όπως την έξυπνη χρήση του πηλού και κεραμικών πλακιδίων που δείχνει την αραβική τεχνική και επιρροή.
 Αν δεν θελετε να προχωρήσετε στην αναζήτηση του τελικου κουτιου, μια φωτογραφία σας μπροστά στο μιναρε θα ειναι απόδειξη της αναζήτησής σας, αφου ο σκοπος μου ειναι να δείτε αυτο το μνημείο !
