Geocache Description:

The Bridge to Tonawanda Island has been a favorite hangout for both kids and trains for many years. When I was one of those kids…the bridge still used to ‘swing’!

The lumber business began on Tonawanda Island in 1833 when the East Boston Timber Co. purchased timber rights to Grand Island. They established their head-quarters here on TI. By 1840, the grand white oaks from GI were gone and the East Boston left the area.
In 1882, Smith, Fassett & Co. purchased the island where their lumber company had been for 10 years.

Over the years, “Little Island” has also been home to R.T. Lumber Co, the International Paper Mill, Bison Shipyard, Taylor Devices and the North Tonawanda pumping station.

Do you think that Eliza Jane and Boots used to watch the bridge swing????

The cache that used to be located near the Swing Bridge itself came under some controversy of late! So to keep the history alive, I am bringing you to the tracks that ran across the bridge. You can certainly see the bridge as you drive across to Tonawanda Island.

Enjoy, and as always, please avoid night caching and calling attention to the hide.
