Highway 291 is almost as old as Flin Flon itself. Originally it was a trail/road connecting Flin Flon to Channing and the lakes south and east of Flin Flon. It eventually became the northern portion of Hwy 10 when it was extended north in 1951. When Hwy 10 was extended once again to approach Flin Flon from the east of town in the early 1960's it became Hwy 291. To many locals it is still known as Channing Drive or road, , the old Flin Flon Hwy or simply "the road to the dump".
Did you know that Hwy 291 is perhaps the only provincial hwy that starts (and ends) in one province after passing through a different province? Did also you know that the Sask portion at 532 m is perhaps the shortest hwy connecting 2 provincial borders (in this case its north and east)?
