Geocache Description:

This cache is a microcache that will bring you to an iconic Baltimore building. The traffic around this cache can be intense at times, and I don't recommend a rush-hour search.

In 1892, Baltimore silversmith Charles Stieff founded the Florence Steel Company, which became Stieff Silver in 1904. This cache will bring you to was the Stieff Factory, constructed in 1924 (with additions made in later years). The Stieff Company was a Baltimore institution, and its sign--visible from I-83--is iconic. Many local photographers have snapped photos of the building over the years, and its even been the subject of paintings by local artists like Greg Otto. For more information on the factory, check out this website devoted to Stieff Silver.

The factory went defunct in 1999, and is now used as a retail/office building for a number of businesses and organizations. Its sign, however, remains in good repair, and the building has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The cache is a silver (what else?) bison tube. Its location should put you at a good angle for viewing the building/sign. Snap a photo or two of yourself there and post it in your log if you're so inclined. Also, if you find yourself on a cache run near a holiday, consider stopping by at night; they often change the sign color for special occasions.

Note: to get the cache, there should be no need to remove its camo from its spot. Simply lift the top a bit, and tip the camo to get the tube.
