Geocache Description:

Zinc headstones and markers are found throughout North America. While the most common use of this material was to make headstones there are a few war memorials mainly for the American Civil War.

While the markers are actually sand cast zinc, for marketing purposes were often referred to as white bronze. While driving by Union Cemetery I noticed a number of Zinc markers and one day decided to take a stroll with the idea of creating a few waymarks for the Zinc Headstone category. I was surprised to find quite a number of them so instead decided to create this Letterbox Hybrid cache so people could go for a stroll and also enjoy this old section of the cemetery.

The posted coordinates are for the the first stage.  I recommend that people park at the designated parking coordinates and walk around the cemetary to gather the information you need.  The cache should take you less then an hour and would be a nice evening stroll during the summer.  While the cache is best completed by foot rather than driving around the cemetery. A few other rules to abide by include:

1. Do not attempt this cache at night. The cemetery is closed from dusk to dawn. Many of the markers are visible from King Street and Thornton St and people snooping may bring the police.

2.Do not park on the lawn. There are designated parking spots at the front entrance off King Street.

3. Do not block the roadways as they are all single car width, another reason to park at the front.

4.  At the request of the Cemetary managment, do not post a photo of any headstone identifying a name on the monument and post it on the internet.  You are welcome to take a photo for your personal records,  and if the names are obscured (STAND IN FRONT OF THE NAME) you may post it on the cache page.

Cache :    You may visit the listed waypoints in any order you like to gather the required information.  You will need to visit all 13 locations to get the information you need.   I have listed the waypoints in an order that worked for me while strolling around the cemetary.

1.  From the parking coordinates and head east along the road 38 metres to the posted coords and find the Zinc marker for Maggie Beath (Stage1).  What was Maggie's age at her death = A

2.  A few metres east  of the Beath marker, you will find a tall zinc marker for Phillips.  How old was Samuel Phillips when he died = B

3.  Heading north north west 28 metres look for a zinc marker for Mackinder.  What are the last two digits of the year Richard Mackinder died = C

4.  Continue heading north 70 metres and look for a Trigg zinc marker.  What was the age of Thomas Trigg when he died plus the last two digits in the year Mary Trigg died = D

5.  Head 40 metres north west to the Hyland zinc marker.  How old was Robert Hyland when he died  = E

6. Next head 80 metres west north west and pay a visit to Hill.  How old was Ellen Hill when she died = F

7. Turn south and find the Burns marker 51 metres south of your current position.  How old was John Burns when he died = G

8.  Continuing south about 33 metres is a zinc marker for Langmaid/Phillips.  How old was George Phillips when he died = H

9.  A further 20 metres south is the Lick zinc marker.  What are the last two digits in the year Jennie Lick was born = I

10.  43 metres south south east is the Blain zinc marker.   What are the last two digits in the year Elizabeth Blain died = J

11.  Heading southwest now, look for the Mallory zinc marker.  How old was Charles Mallory when he died = K

12. Continue heading west 42 metres and look for Storie's zinc marker.  What date in August did Jane Ann Dewar, wife of James D. Storie die = L

13. Turn north again and walk 44 metres to find Cullen.  How old was G.S. Cullen when he died = M

Add all of the answers from A to M (A+B+C+D+E+F+G+H+I+J+K+L+M) = XXX

Add this number to the following coordinate.    N 43 52.780   and W 78 52.816

Ignore the decimal point.    You now have the coordinates for the final cache.

This letterbox hybrid cache containers a stamp and marker to mark off your logbook.  You can just sign the logbook if you do not have your own stamp.  Please return the stamp and marker to the cache as they are NOT trading items.
