Greatland Reviewer: Hello:

This cache page has been archived due to the lack of response to one or more prior Reviewer Note(s) about issue(s) with the cache and because the Cache Owner has not been online since February 2016. If the owner would like to have the cache unarchived, please contact me through my profile as soon as possible before another cache gets placed nearby.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page requires it to go through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

A beautiful view of the Pago Pago Harbor and Utulei Bay. This cache will take you to a rarely visited place just above the Governor's Mansion in American Samoa.

View of Fagatoto and Utulei Bays

In the 1970's American Samoa operated a cable car from the hill above Utulei Beach Park to the top of Mount 'Alava (elevation 1,719 ft). The cable car was the scene of a horrific accident on April 17, 1980 when seven American military servicemen and one civilian was killed during an airshow for the 80th anniversary of American Samoa as a US territory. One of the jets involved in the airshow clipped the cable for the tram and crashed into a hotel on Pago Pago Harbor. A memorial for these men stands near the site of the cache.

Shortly after the accident, and another involving the cable cars, the tram was shut down. The cable cars used during that time are still sitting on the hilltop next to the motor and gear housing. A fale (or Samoan House) sits above the tram station and serves as a beautiful overlook.
