This cache is placed on 37 acres of land known as Southlands. It is located in Warwick Parish on South Road. The estate has a main house, garden pools, woodland areas, a beach of its own, and limestone quarry gardens.
In the 1700’s the ministers of Warwick’s Christ Church used to live on this estate. During that time the island’s oldest school Warwick Academy fell on hard times so classes were held there.
In the 1800’s limestone blocks from the quarries were used to construct many buildings at the city of Hamilton.
James Morgan was a prominent owner and wealthy businessman and the next owner of the property. He acquired 80 more acres. The estate went through much development and when Brigadier Maconochie purchased it he allowed the area across the road to be used as a training ground for U.S. soldiers during WWII which became known at the Southlands Anti-Aircraft School.
Willow Bank Foundation purchased Southlands in 1977 and later sold it in 2005 to a group of businessmen who planned to build a five star luxury hotel in the estate. This prompted a huge public outcry. Bermudians concerned about destroying the natural environment of the area objected by physically protesting and by signing petitions. Subsequently the plan to build was dropped and permission was given to the Jumeirah Group to build at Morgan’s Point in Southampton, a former U.S. Naval Station.
Not far from Southlands to the east is Swizzle Inn. A great place to eat and drink.
PS Because there are so many huge rubber trees at GZ it was difficult to get good coords. If you have a problem finding the cache, e-mail me and I’ll send you a picture.
