Another Wherigo cache in Gauteng, this one is based in the park around Emmarentia Dam and the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. The cache is not hidden at the coordinates provided. You need to complete the Wherigo cartridge called Fairytales and Fables to get the final coordinates.
The Fairytales and Fables Wherigo is a fantasy adventure through the park and is a walk of just over 3 kilometres from start to ground zero that should take about 1½ hours to complete.
We have tested this on:
- an iPad using the Wherigo application v317 by GroundSpeak
- an Oregon 550 using Garmin Player v5.80
- a Nokia N8 using OpenWIG v0.4.3
Some of the lessons we have learnt running Wherigo cartridges:
* The iPad Wherigo application sometimes gives a memory error, so we suggest you close all the other apps before you play
* If playing on an iPad or iPhone, you need to have the screen in portrait mode, with the home button at the bottom, or the compass will not point in the correct direction.
* We found that when playing it on a smartphone, we battled finding the first few zones, and as we got further into the game it was more accurate, so suggest that if you are playing with a smartphone you start running the wherigo app about 10 minutes before you start playing to give the GPS time to settle down.
* Running the Wherigo app on any device requires patience, sometimes it looks like it is doing nothing, but you may just need to give it a few seconds to load new zones or tasks. Sometimes it shows the previous item or screen before loading the new one. If you get impatient and continue pressing buttons, you could end up with nowhere to go.
* Make sure your device is fully charged, as you don't want it to go flat on you part way through your game.

Dogs are not allowed in the Northern part of the park around the Botanical Gardens, and the Wherigo does take you through that section of the park, so we suggest you do not take your dogs with you when doing this cache.
Once you complete the Wherigo, you will receive the final coordinates to the physical cache and the hint. You need to find and sign the log for the cache to be able to claim a found it smiley.
