Geocache Description:

History In Shingletown.
Shingletown is a small town, located along California State Route 44.
In the hills just below Mount Lassen. Where a history of logging large timber pine, fir & cedar.
It is also knows as the "Gateway to Lassen"

'NOTE' I included the seasonal find icon here.
Because it does snow here in the winter and
the cache may be difficult to find when it snows!
The Cache will be available all year.

Shingeltown Store

Freelan's Store was Built by John and Jane Freeland in 1854.

Jane was registered as a “sole trader” in 1861. In Sierra Township (Shingletown)
The business of stock raising, farming and Hotel-Keeping. With their sons Bradford and William.

The store was sold to John McCarley and Al “The Banker” Smith, in 1871 McCarley & Smith Built the first Hotel of account and Later bought the dry sawmill. The store sold everything from harness, tools, rigging, clothing, groceries, feed and grain to Steam Tractors until they sold in 1910.

The building also housed a cafe, bar and at times the Post Office.
Established June 24 1874: McCarley as Post Master.

The Original Building was torn down in 1966.

This cache is at 3525 Feet altitude , and it may NOT be accessible in the snowy months.
