Butter Church

Known as either The Butter Church or the Old Stone Church, if you can find it, it's pretty impressive to see. It was built in 1870 and was only used a short time before being abandoned for ten years later in favour of St. Ann's Catholic Church at the base of Mt. Tzouhalem only a kilometre or two up the road. You're probably still thinking Butter Church? Certainly it wasn't made out of butter... The nickname comes from, those who helped build the church were given butter that had been churned by Father Peter Rondeault as payment. Unfortunately with the church not in use, in roughly 1883, it was stripped of everything but it's roof for use in a church on neighbouring Saltspring Island.
