This cache is a hidden ammo tin placed high above the Billys Creek falls which is along a section of the Grand Strzelecki Track in the Strzelecki Ranges, about halfway between the Jumbuk camp and Morwell National Park.
THIS SECTION OF GRAND STRZELECKI TRACK IS CURRENTLY CLOSED, HOWEVER THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE OFF TRACK ACCESS COMBINED WITH OLD LOGGING TRAILS. CAUTION: TERRAIN IS VERY STEEP IN PLACES. Contact cache owner for further details.
This is not an easy walk. Track conditions vary greatly depending on weather and use, and may include slippery and muddy areas. A number of creek crossings are required. Sturdy hiking boots and appropriate bushwalking gear is recommended. The walk could take the majority of a day. Please let someone know of your intentions prior to leaving home. The cache has been placed to coincide with the recent official opening of the Grand Strzelecki Track on 6th and 7th May, 2012.
The Grand Strzelecki track [GST] covers in excess of 100 kilometres of walking and hiking tracks, stretching from Morwell National Park to Tarra-Bulga National Park and Balook. The track is divided into segments / a series of loops, complimented with camping areas, enabling the hiker to walk shorter sections in one or two day hikes, or longer stretches of 3 or 4 days.
Changing landscapes including valleys, farmlands, old and regrowth forests, bushfire regeneration, and managed forests are all traversed. You can explore primeval rainforests of delicate tree ferns and towering mountain ash. Wildlife is abundant including koalas, wallabies, echidnas and possums. You will be sure to meet or hear the superb lyrebird in your travels. Amazing views of Bass Strait, Wilson Promontory and Latrobe Valley can be enjoyed on higher sections of the trail, while on lower areas you can discover hidden creeks, mossy gullies, waterfalls and rockpools.
Directions: Follow the Grand Ridge Road from Balook heading west, then turn north onto Jeeralang West Road. There are suitable spots to park a car along a section of road near S38° 24.992 E146° 28.564. Access from Morwell National Park along Billys creek is also possible. Keener walkers will choose to make a decent hike of it from Morwell NP or Tarra Bulga NP following the Grand Strzelecki track signs. The cache is hidden close to the section of track (approx 15m uphill) that deviates around the waterfall
CONGRATULATIONS to Jimmymaff on a huge effort to negotiate the trail to this cache. Persistence has paid off!
