Sa Dragonera (Dragon-Island) is an uninhabited island right in front of the mid-west coast of Majorca. The 800m wide Canal de Freu flow separates the island from the quit village San Telmo (Sant Elm), therefore it can only be reached by boat.
Dragonera is approximately 3,200 mts in length, 1100 m wide and on its peak Piko Popi of a height of 360 m you will find the ancient lighthouse Na Popi (Far Vell). its name steems from the view on the island from San Telmo: The shape of a lying dragon (see picture on German edition of Wikipedia)!
Due to a hidden large fresh water cave (subterranean lake, 40m below sea level), Dragonera was used by pirates for hundreds of years as a base and place of refuge and it is said that Barbarossa has been there.
Nowadays Dragonera is a natural protection area, which you can explore by yourself, but you must not leave the paths, not disturb any animals (like the endemic Dragonera Lizard, see picture) or leave any trash behind.
