Geocache Description:

Fort Vengeance:(1780 - 1781), Pittsford vt   Built on Otter Creek west of Cox Mountain by the independent Republic of Vermont to garrison militia in the defense of local settlers in the Otter Valley from British and Indian atacks. Originally unnamed until one defender was killed by Indians and his comrades swore vengeance - so naming the fort.  An easy park and grab with a wonderful view

During the American Revolution the settlers in this valley were nearly forced to abandon their hard won homes.  In the summer of 1777, a Battle was fought just  over the hills to the West.  (see the nearby Hubbardton Battlefield caches).  Electing to stay, they built the fort and defended it from attacks by British Indians and Loyalist until wars end in 1783.
