Willkommen to Freistatt!
In the late 1800s a group of German-speaking people migrated from Minnesota to Southwest Missouri and established a community in the Spring River Prairie area and named their town Freistatt. They were united by their language and their faith and established Trinity Lutheran Church there in 1874. Each summer, in August, the town hosts its annual Erntefest, or "Harvest Festival." This event is similar to Oktoberfest in Germany with a beer garden, German cuisine, games and dancing. The first Erntefest was held in 1974 and each year is sponsored by the Freistatt Lions Club as its main fundraiser for the many programs they support.
