Fanning Education Centre Geocaching Workshop
This geocache is being published to highlight the geocaching workshops put on at Fanning Education Centre June 7th and 8th, 2012. Interest in geocaching has been generated in the school by a Heritage Fair Project submitted by part of the local geocaching team "Geokares".
The cache container is small (camoed) and contains log book, pencil and small trading items.
Fanning Education Centre is located in the picturesque community of Hazel Hill, situated in eastern Guysborough County. Hazel Hill is surrounded by beautiful lakes and is of great historical significance in telecommunications beginning in the late 1800s and extending well into the turn of the century. The pride and joy of the community was the Commercial Cable Company with it's "Canso Station" located just a stone's throw away from the school. Fanning Education Centre is a modern Primary to Eight facility that offers education programs and services for students to enable them to develop their potential and acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy, active, and prosperous society. The staff of Fanning Education Centre encourages parents/guardians to take an active role in promoting a positive and collaborative environment.
Physical Activity and Geocaching
Why promote physical activity at school? Schools are in a unique position to have a positive influence on the health of children, youth, and their families. Plus, the growing body of research from Canada and around the world shows that children and youth that engage in regular physical activity have improved academic performance. Promoting physical activity at school is a win-win! Children and youth need daily physical activity for healthy growth and development. The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that children and youth accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity every day. Yet research shows that only 9 percent of boys and 4 percent of girls accumulate 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity per day.
Geocaching is a great way to introduce a new hobby and incorporate physical activity in schools, children, youth and their families!
