Large cache on a tough wee scramble
Near to the Earth Cache at Indian Rock sits Bell Craig.
Bell Craig is the remains of a volcanic vent, the core of a volcano whose outer layers have been corroded and eroded over millions of years.
The climb to the top is a challenge and should only be done with great care. The cache sits on the approach slopes and offers an exposed scramble to its resting place below the upper reaches of the Craig. If you gain the top, the views are panoramic from Ben Lomond in the North to the South Ayrshire Coast. Nearer at hand and to the south of the cache sits ‘The Targets’.
The Targets is the longest straight stretch of road on the island and was used before the first war for target practice by the Bute Mountain Battery. The targets for the rifles were stored in a metal hut just off the road near to the Target Walk kissing gate.
