Blanding turtles exist as an isolated population in southwestern Nova Scotia and are an endangered species. Research is ongoing and conservation and recovery efforts are underway.
A few Facts:
-It is one of the longest lived (greater than 70 yrs) and slowest maturing (20 + years) turtles.
-It has a moderately high domed top shell which is spotted or streaked with greyish -yellow.
-Its shell is semi-hinged, allowing the turtle to pull its head and limbs in for defense.
- The Blanding turtle's chin, throat and underside of the long neck are bright yellow.
-It appears to have a permanent `smile`because of the notch in its upper jaw.
