The cache is within sight of Bow Quarter, formerly the Bryant and May match factory.
Matches were made here by a largely female workforce who suffered terrible pay and working conditions. A system of fines cut their wages even further, for example, if a worker was late they would only be paid for half a day.
The white phosphor used to dip the head of the match was especially dangerous and because the workers were forced to take meal breaks at their posts this could result in a facial bone cancer known as 'phossy jaw'.
In June 1888, 'The Link' published an article entitled 'The White Slave Trade' which reported on the plight of the matchgirls. The Bryant & May response was to sack the workers who had leaked the information. This led to a spontaneous strike action when 1400 matchgirls walked out.
An appeal by Annie Besant in The Link soon gave rise to a strike fund for the workers. This support allowed the strike to continue and a few weeks later representatives for the matchgirls went before parliament to appeal their case. This resulted in a considerable improvement in conditions.
You are looking for an appropriate container. There is a pen in the top, the log is inside.
