Geocache Description:

The beautiful new puncheon on the Grand Ridge trail is worth a visit, just to admire this beautiful, forest-built structure.

The Grand Ridge trail is another remarkable resource to recreationists on the east side. Although primarily used by mountain bikers (and therefore somewhat less peaceful and serene), this trail is really lovely and feels a bit more secluded than some of the other nearby choices. And at 14 miles, round-trip, it also allows for quite a long run, bike, or hike. I recommend starting at the small turnout on Issaquah - Fall City Road, since you will be going uphill on the way out, and downhill on the way back!

The puncheon bridge at the cache site is 600 feet long and raises the trail above the hemlock bog that has slowed down bikers and hikers since the original trail was constructed beginning in 1990. The hemlock bog contributes flow to the headwaters of the East Fork Issaquah Creek and Canyon Creek, which are both salmon-bearing streams.

A key feature of the puncheon bridge is the large cedar planks used as decking, all of which were salvaged from downed timber in King County parks and milled in the forest alongside the trail. The overall effort on the Grand Ridge trail has reportedly required 40,000 hours by 1,500 volunteers over a period of nearly a decade!

The Grand Ridge Trail is open to hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers.

The cache is a well-camoed micro beyond a feature that's an interesting combination of natural and man-made near the north end of the puncheon. No need to trample/disturb vegetation.

You may need to bend one of the nails to get the container out. Please try to put it back the way you found it.

FTF Lfppd&MyBetterHalf proved that it really is not that difficult (even if at least four previous DNFs would tend to disagree)!
