Geocache Description:

camoed pill bottle

"They have tales ." Oh yes they do ! P.E. Islanders love to share tales and there is no shortage of yarns both short and tall to tell. The history of this tiny island is replete with strange occurrences and each seems to spawn one or more explanations to account for them. Ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night are commonplace in this lore. The stranger the actual events the more detailed the often supernatural story around it. Some of these tales go back centuries. Loss and gain, treasure, triumph, disaster, birth, life and death all feature prominently. Not many who live here doubt the existence of spirits and ' haunts' , nor the places they can be found. Forerunners, omens of all kinds, even Satan himself often show up in these accounts.
I have lived here too long to dismiss all these tales as fiction, nor the beliefs that they encompass. I know too many perfectly sober honest people who have had ' strange ' experiences to doubt the veracity of what they say happened.
This series contains a variety of such tales I gleaned from several Island folklore books, old newspaper articles, a few first-person accounts and even an on-line site or two. None are original to me and I certainly wish to thank all those who gathered the stories. I have tried to place the caches in the communities and, if possible, on or close to the exact sites of the described events. For some of these stories you would NOT find me at the exact site late at night. Not a chance. I hope you enjoy both the story and the going to where it happened !

# 9 : Blumphey's Ghost : This tale comes from Tignish Run where
one Sunday in late May , many years ago three fishermen went to join their friends at Myricks bunkhouse for a wee bit of relaxation before the coming week of lobster fishing. As they walked along the sandy road they followed the shores of Macleods Pond, known today as Little Tignish River. They talked of the coming week and the fishing to be done. When a fourth man joined the company they hailed him with the friendly manner used to greet all friend , neighbours and even, like this man, strangers to them. When there was no response they al felt a strange sense of foreboding and a shiver up and down their spines. The silence of the evening deepened as they walked along with the still-silent stranger in step beside them. This silence became more and more oppressive until suddenly the stranger vanished!
Not understanding what was going on and not inclined to find out they hastened on to the bunkhouse where there white faces and disturbed manner led to their being questioned as to what was wrong....they didin't quite know what to say but then of a sudden one of the bunkhouse fishermen spoke up. : " You've see Blumphey." he said . Then the story came out. Blumphey had been a silent brooding sort of Irishman who had come to the area years back. This poor lonely man had been found hanging in his shed one day. because of suicide laws of the time his body could not be buried in sanctified ground of a cemetery so he was laid in the ground in a shallow grave besides Macleods Pond. Some years later the grave site was washed away and the body was siad to have been swept off... ever since then the ghost of Blumphey had been encountered now and again by travellers along that way. Perhaps he is still there today.
