For Our Visitors to BC

With visitors coming from afar, some facts on British Columbia might be interesting...some of our 'locals' might learn a thing or two as well. British Columbia as you all know is the most western province in Canada, having entered the Canadian Confederation in 1871. With 33 million people in Canada, BC has the third highest population with only 4.5 million people, although when you look at the average number of people per square kilometer we're sitting in the sixth spot on that list with a roomy 4.8 people per km2. We are an extremely multi-cultural province with 197 First Nations bands, and with 40,000 immigrants arriving every year we have many ethic schools and societies, many languages spoken and more and more language options being offered in public schools. BC has nearly 1,000 provincial parks and protected areas and over 14% of BC is protected land, more than any other province in BC which includes 200,000 hectares of habitat for BC's official mammal, the Kermode Bear, a black bear with a mutant gene that has turned it into a white bear. Check out some of our other Legacy caches to learn a little more about BC, such as Western Red Cedar, Steller's Jay or Dogwood.
