Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the former Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Nagasaki Branch.

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Nagasaki Branch was established in 1892. Architect Kikutaro Shimoda designs the building and is greatest as a stone European-style building in Nagasaki-city. This bank was the only foreign bank from Kobe and to the west in those days. In addition, this bank was the special exchange bank which bought and sold the foreign currency in London, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
This building was appointed to Japanese important cultural property in 1989.
Nagasaki-city owns this building now and is used as the multipurpose hall.

香港上海銀行長崎支店は１８９２年に開設された。建物は建築家の下田菊太郎が設計した、現存する唯一の建造物で、長崎市内の石造り洋館として最大の規模を持つ。当時神戸以西唯一の外国銀行で、外国為替やロンドンや上海、香港における外貨の売買を主要業務とした特殊為替銀行だった。建物は、1989年に国重要文化財に指定されている。
現在は長崎市に買収され、旧香港上海銀行長崎支店記念館として、多目的ホールとして利用されている。
