Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Don-Don-Zaka, Nagasaki-city.

Don-Don-Zaka is a slope of the stone pavements in higashiyamate district of Nagasaki-city.
The name of this slope comes from the shape of the gutter at the both ends of the slope. The section of the gutter has a shape of the V character. It is an advantage that rainwater is easy to flow through the triangular gutter. The form of the gutter is different from the upper part and the lower part of the slope to regulate the speed of flowing water. Therefore rainwater flowing through the gutter makes a sound with "Don-Don".

ドンドン坂は、長崎の東山手地区にある石畳の坂です。
この坂の名前は、坂の両側にある側溝の形に由来しています。その側溝のＶ字型をしており、雨水を流すのに都合の良い形をしています。このような側溝は、別名オランダ溝とも呼ばれており、居留地造成当時から存在していたらしく、居留地に住む外国人達が考案したのではないかといわれています。水流の速さを調節するために溝の形が上と下とで異なっており、雨が降るとドンドンと音をたてて雨水が流れ落ちるところから、「ドンドン坂」と呼ばれています。
