SEH Green Trail #7: Become an A/C Expert Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kubatronix: I am going to be moving out of the area, so I am retiring these remaining SEH Green Trail caches along with the SEH Power Trail Series. The brush here has thickened up and made the original cache location hard to access. Thanks to all who visited! I hope that you enjoyed searching and finding this series of caches.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the San Elijo Hills Green Trail - enjoy the “green tips” you will encounter! Green tip #7: Raise your thermostat to 78 and perform necessary maintenance for efficiency.

There are 18 caches in the trail (As of February 2021, only 3 Green Trail caches remain: #2, #7 and #13). The parking spots below position you at different entry points into the trails depending upon where you wish to start. The San Elijo Hills Green Trail is intended to be fun and educational. We all can do more to live as sustainably as possible so that we not only save money for ourselves in the short term but ensure scarce resources like water, minerals, food and energy will be available for the long term future without causing undue harm to our planet. Each cache contains a “green tip” that is fairly easy and cheap without major lifestyle changes. The Green trail from #10 thru #17 are tips, caches and a trail suitable for kids, while the remainder are good for all but require a bit more hiking. In particular, there is very steep terrain between Green #2 and #3 so make sure you have your walking pole! This cache contains cards with a summary of half of the green tips. Please take one and let me know when there are only a few left so I can refill it. Green tip #7: Use Air Conditioning Wisely You can save energy dollars by following these simple tips. Over time, you will see your energy efficiency increase and your energy savings multiply. - Clean or replace filters at least once a month. Dirty filters make your system work harder and run longer than necessary. They also encourage the buildup of mold and mildew, making cleaning more difficult - Shade outside air conditioning units. A/C units shaded by trees or other means work more efficiently and use up to 10% less electricity - Clean your AC's condenser/evaporator coils at the beginning of the season. Clean coils lower your energy costs, extend the unit's life and provide cleaner air for you to breathe. The fin coils on the outside AC unit can be washed with a hose. Coils on inside units may be difficult to get to and may require a trained technician - Keep debris and high grass away from the condenser. These obstacles block the airflow to the unit. Blockage makes the condenser work harder and run longer - Set your thermostat at 78 in the summer and 68 in the winter. Each degree cooler or warmer will increase your energy use by 6 to 8%. For instance, setting your thermostat at 72 in the summer could increase energy use by up to 40% Included in this cache are "Tip cards" for half of the tips on the Green Trail. Please take one and let me know when there are just a few left so I can refill them. Thanks!
