(c) Salzburg University
You're standing in the middle of one of the oldest parts of the Salzburg University. The Paris Lodron University in Salzburg was founded by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron in 1622. It was an addition to a "Gymnasium", a secondary school that had been founded in 1617.
The University was initially set up and maintained by a federation of Benedictine abbeys from Salzburg, Switzerland, Bavaria and Austria. In the early years, the courses taught were theology, divinity, philosophy as well as law and medicine.
Above you on the first floor is the "Grosse Aula" - the official ceremony hall of the University. In 1761, at the age of only 5 years, Mozart played a dancing foodboy in „Sigismundus Hungariae Rex“. And in 1767 the premiere of his opera „Apollo et Hyacinthos“ (KV 38) was taking place up there - Mozart himself played the piano - he was only 11 years old.
