Geocache Description:

Novo Brdo is mentioned for the first time in 1326 and even before that time it was known as Novaberd,Novus Mons or Novamonte.

In ancient times this area was known for its mines who provided gold, silver, lead and iron. It's been said that the castle was built as a byzantium outpost in the ninth century to watch over the a gold mine that lied adjacent to the castle and also that all ancient coins from Dubrovnik were produced in this area.

The fortress, build on the top of a hill, was overseeing the valley and roads towards other mines.

In 1455 the fortress came under seige of the Ottomans and fell after 40 days.

Untill now, you can still visit the remains of the fortress and enjoy a really beautiful scenic view. You can drive almost untill the top of the hill. Only the last hundred metres must be done on foot.

In the nearby area there are still some mines left, but they aren't operational anymore. altough, anyone who wants to visit them has to be aware that mining areas sometimes contain open shaftholes one can fall in.

Have a nice time here and enjoy the visit.
