Geocache Description:

This is a 50 ml container hanging in an evergreen tree. It contains a log only.

Bell Island is the largest island in Conception Bay and is accessed by a 20 minute ferry ride from Portugal Cove. The island is some 9 km long and was once a very thriving mining community. With the decreasing demand for iron ore the mines closed in 1966. The population on the island is now about 4000.

Bell Island makes for a very pleasant day trip. You can drive to the ferry terminal in Portugal Cove and for a small fee of just over $6.00 you can make a return trip. There are many things to do and see while on the island. Although the number of geocaches are small in number, the locations and scenery are more than worth it.

While waiting for a return trip to Portugal Cove, I placed a geocache at the top of the wooden stairs near the ferry terminal on Bell Island. You will have to climb to the top of the stairs and locate a few evergreen trees that are very near the path. The cache will be found hanging about waist height.
