Geocache Description:

Just a short wander off the Queen Charlotte Track.

This cache can be done either as part of the Queen Charlotte Walk or as a one off expedition. If doing the latter there is a good park at S 41° 13.163´ E 173° 58.264´, and then proceed NE on the QC Track for approx. one kilometre to the turnoff to the Trig. After a bit of a climb off the Track you get to Trig A815 overlooking both the Queen Charlotte and the Pelorus Sounds. So make sure the day is a good one before coming here.

On a good day you can see all the inner bays and coves of the Sounds, the Kenepuru and outer Pelorus Sounds to the north; the Queen Charlotte Sound as far as the entry to Tory Channel to the east; the inner Queen Charlotte Sound to the south; and the Mahau and Inner Pelorus Sounds to the west. You should also be able to make out Picton, Waikawa, Waitaria Bay, Portage, Anakiwa and numerous other Sounds locations.

DOC time for the return trip from the carpark is 2½ hours. We found this timing quite generous. It’s an uphill tramp ALL the way – gaining height of about 300m – on a well formed, fairly even track. Watch out for MTB’s – they can arrive quite suddenly.
