When hiking the Parosa Trail in Cobbler Creek I came across this lovely rest spot that has been put up by the 'friends of Cobbler Creek'. It is a great spot to stop, rest, sit, admire, drink, eat and reflect.
40 Years ago there was plenty of native bush in this area. Today wedged between the suburbs of Golden Grove and Salisbury. Cobbler Creek recreation Park contains some of the last stands at Mallee Box Grassy woodland in Adelaide.
Since settlement in the 1800's new houses and suburbs have gradually encroached on Adelaide's natural areas. Cobbler Creek is not only a precious reminder of the plants and animals that used to be around Adelaide, but also an important example of a grassy woodland, one of the most poorly conserved habiats in South Australia.
Why are grassy woodlands important? Unlike the denser native forests of the Mount Lofty Ranges, grassy woodlands are usually opened spaced providing plenty of light for rich understory of shrubs, grasses and herbs. The diversity of plants makes grassy woodlands perfect habitat for many animals such as the Eastern Bearded Dragon, Sleepy Lizard and Black-shouldered Kite, species that are more commonly seen in drier, open habitat.
