Aerially Lovely Walk in the Woods - Beeched Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CC Moo: Went to check to today and it has disappeared. Saddened by all the litter that some thoughtless folk have left behind - why can't people just take it home with them? Time to archive this one - sorry!

Geocache Description:

A series of caches set on a gentle walk through some of the most beautiful  and peaceful woodland  around Mount Eagle on the Black Isle with stunning views all around, fabulous flora and fauna, not forgetting a gigantic TV aerial and of course a few caches to make it even better!

This cache has been placed for the "Wood you believe it? Midsummer on the Black Isle event" on 23 June 2012. Please do not search for it before this date.  Special thanks to the Forestry Commission Scotland for permission to place these caches.

This is a working forest and from time to time, felling or other activities may prevent access to this cache. If operations are taking place at the time of your visit, please do not attempt to access the cache and kindly post a Note to let us know that the cache should be temporarily disabled. Thank you.

Whether you chose to find all of these caches in one go or save a few for another day, they are all hidden just off the main path which is well made in most places. There are a couple of sections which can become muddy/ boggy after wet weather but should still be ok to walk, push a buggy, cycle or ride a horse. Part of this caching route follows a sign posted cycle trail, 10 miles to Learnie and 16 miles to Cromarty.

Some of the caches use standard containers and others might be a little bit different! You will need tweezers to extract the log sheets from some of them so be prepared. Also please ensure they are covered up well again and hidden from muggles.

Please note that there is NO vehicular access allowed through these woods, there is a very small car park across the road, please park sensibly and do not block gateways.

Topographically, the Black Isle has a long, central south-west/north-east ridge, most of which is the Mulbuie Ridge, and the highest point of which is Mount Eagle at 256m. This Ridge gradually gives way to lower, gentler, rolling hills, culminating in a series of raised beaches on the coast. The Mulbuie Ridge and other high ground is relatively less fertile and large areas of it are given over to coniferous forestry, though there are frequent areas of open ground and heath.

Mounteagle transmitting station was built in 1961 by ITV. When colour television began in 1969, the nearby BBC owned station at Rosemarkie was chosen over Mount Eagle to carry these broadcasts. Both the UHF and VHF services continued in tandem until 1985, when VHF television was discontinued in the UK. At this point, Mounteagle ceased broadcasting television services entirely. In 1982 Mount Eagle was chosen as the site of the first commercial radio broadcasts in Northern Scotland. In 1996 transmitters for Classic FM were added, and then later in 1997 Mount Eagle began broadcasting television services again, when transmitters were installed for the launch of Channel 5. Digital switchover occurred in the Inverness area in October 2010, and at this point the Channel 5 service was discontinued, and now broadcasts digitally from the nearby Rosemarkie transmitter site. More recently the station has become the first in the area to carry digital radio broadcasts. Mount Eagle transmits from a triangular-cross-section lattice stayed mast which at a height of 243.8m (800ft) is slightly taller than the standard 228m (750ft) structures built on most of the other Independent Television Authority's 405-line sites. The mast is held in place by fifteen stay lines which are secured at ground level by nine anchoring blocks.

There are further aerials, masts and a fire tower to be seen on this walk and there is also a trig point at the highest point.
