Geocache Description:

The cache is medium sized plastic container that is appropriate to the majority of the service provided from this fire station. Cache is FD approved, and maintained by local firemen.

In May of 1915, the Silver Spring Fire Department started with a volunteer force from the ashes of a fire that destroyed the Silver Spring Post Office.  By 1918 the fire department was incorporated and obtained the property across the street, once the site of the Silver Spring National Guard Armory, and became known as Fire Station 1.  Later in the same year, the Silver Spring fire department acquired and placed in service the first motor driven fire engine in Montgomery County.  Today, the old Fire Station 1 exists as a restaurant and brewery that preserves the history of the former firehouse.  The building where you are standing today replaced Fire Station 1 in 2007.  Housed here are Engine 701, Medic 701, and Ambulance 701.  All units are staffed with Montgomery County career personnel and are occasionally supplemented with volunteers.  The building is owned and maintained by Montgomery County and also provides office space for a police substation and Silver Spring maintenance workers.  The future for the building includes plans for a large addition to the south side that will relocate the Dixon Avenue shelter.

Several other prominent neighborhood buildings are within view from the cache's location.  On the opposite side of Georgia Avenue is the World Bulding, which suffered $1 million in damage from a fire that raged through several upper floors in 1991.  Around the corner of the south side of the building exists the B&O RR's Silver Spring Station, which was erected in 1873.

Enjoy the find and the history of the fire service here. PLEASE be sure to replace in the most obvious orientation so that the cache stays dry!
