Linea Gotica: l’avamposto del castello Aghinolfi. Antica fortificazione in posizione strategica sulla via Aurelia, dall’agosto del ’44 costituì un avamposto della Linea Gotica. Nel suo torrione fu posto un cannone puntato verso Viareggio. Per la sua posizione alta e isolata fu oggetto di un ripetuto tiro al bersaglio dall’artiglieria Alleata attestata a Viareggio. Non riuscirono però a far saltare il cannone perché il torrione è in realtà solo un rivestimento di un blocco di roccia viva e questo i tedeschi lo avevano scoperto, infatti, per far posto al cannone, avevano scavato nel sasso e la sua bocca usciva da una feritoia che apparentemente sembrava alla sommità del mastio, ma in realtà era alla base. Nelle celebrazioni del cinquantenario della fine della guerra, alcuni soldati americani tornarono per essere insigniti con medaglia d’oro e tra questi c’èra proprio l’artigliere che più aveva preso di mira il torrione senza riuscire a distruggerlo. Fu sua precisa richiesta di capirne il perché e solo dopo tanti anni potè togliersi la curiosità. Alla fine del castello rimase un mucchio di macerie ma a fine anni 90 il torrione è stato ricostruito ed è visitabile ( a pagamento) nei pomeriggi dei fine settimana . La cache si trova nella piazzetta con “monumento rotondo e asta” di fronte al cancello di ingresso. E’ dietro il muretto della “rientranza” con due piccole panchine di sasso. ............................................................................................................................................................ Gothic Line: the outpost of Aghinolfi castle. Ancient fortification in strategic position on Aurelia road, from August ’44 was an outpost of the Gothic Line. Inside its great tower a cannon was pointed to Viareggio. Being perfectly visible on the hit of a hill, it was object of a strong target practice by the Allies artillery lined up in Viareggio. They could not destroy the cannon because the tower really was only a covering of a big boulder and the Germans had discovered it and, to locate the cannon, they excavated in the boulder and the mouth came out from a loophole apparently on the top of the tower, but really at its base. During the celebration of 50 years from the end of 2nd war, some American soldiers were invited to receive a gold medal. One of these was the artilleryman that more fired to the tower without destroy it. He precisely asked to know the reason and only after so many years he could know it. At the end of actions the castle was only debris and only ten years ago the great tower was reconstructed and is open for visiting (tool) in the afternoon of weekends. CACHE: in the small square with “round monument” in front of main gate. It is behind the wall of the “recess” with two small stone seats .
